Fashion Design School Creates The Looks Of Tomorrow
Ok all you Project Runway fans, I will tell you how Parsons became the Parsons School of Fashion Design. This design fashion school was originally an art school founded by William Merritt Chase in 1896. In 1904, Frank Alvah Parsons joined Chase and became president of the school. Parsons established the first programs of fashion design, interior design, advertising and graphic design. As a modern curriculum was developed, many successful designers were closely connected with the school and by the mid-1960s, Parsons had become "the training ground of Seventh Avenue."
Parson's fashion building is situated in the heart of the Garment District. All fashion studio courses are taught at that location. They are equipped with a Fashion Computing lab as well. Familiar names of alumni include Donna Karan, Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, to name a few. This is a well recognized place for those of us who witness the "make it work" moment of design hopefuls from week to week. Parson's has other schools abroad in Paris, the Dominican Republic and Japan.
Fusion Fashion Show is an annual event that pits the students of the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parson's in a fashion show competition. A top designer is picked from each school, and they are awarded a valued scholarship. Parson's conducts an annual Benefit and Fashion Show raising funds for scholarships and academic programs at the school and honors influential fashion designers. The Designer of the Year Award has launched the careers of many famous alumni.
Fashion design schools do not just teach clothing design and construction. Fashion merchandising, fashion shows, and marketing is also a major part of the fashion industry.
Apart from Parson's and the Fashion Institute, there are many other schools that offer similar studies. Brooks, Westwood and the International Academy of Design Institute offers an Associate Degree of Applied Science or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design and fashion merchandising. Each one of these schools offer career planning, portfolio help and assistance in obtaining financial assistance.
It will be much hard work, but your dreams are definitely not out of reach if you're passionate about a career in fashion. Not every person can be a famous designer, but there are many other careers in the fashion industry.
